Congratulations to current graduate student Diana Thomas and alum Fengyi Gu on their recent paper in Biochemistry! In work funded my NIGMS, they used a new chemical approach to probe atypical hydrogen bonds that are one of the most frequent features of membrane proteins. Learn more here.

Another congratulations to Haoliang for publishing his latest paper in RSC Advances! In work funded by the Welch Foundation, Haoliang made some new backbone-modified amino acids that dramatically reshape their conformational propensities. Remarkably, these modified amino acids impart solubility to unstructured peptides, even in the context of a highly aggregation-prone sequence. Learn more here.

A big congratulations to Daeun for publishing her recent preprint! Daeun developed a new method to probe the nature of protein aggregates in living cells, which gives us new insights into the behavior of the Parkinson's associated protein, alpha-synuclein. Funded by NINDS, this is one of the first projects we started in the Newberry lab, and we're very grateful to Daeun for her leadership on bringing this project to completion. A big congratulations to graduate student Haoliang Zheng for his recent paper in Protein Science! In a project funded by the Welch Foundation, Haoliang improved the methods available for quantifying noncovalent interactions in folded proteins. His method allowed him to make the first experimental measurements of underappreciated hydrogen bonds in beta sheets. Learn more here.
